EARTH DAY APRIL 22nd
Earth Day is a day for action; a chance to show
how important the environment is to us. Whether you organize an
event in your school or inform the community about environmental
issues, Earth Day is about uniting voices around the globe in
support of a healthy planet. This year for Earth Day 2012 we:
1. Organized an Art exhibition
in our school demanding a sustainable future.
2. Beautified the Schoolyard:
we asked for
donations of bulbs, flowers, and other plantings, and organized a
group of people with green thumbs to make garden beds around the
schoolyard.
3. Collected Gently Used School Supplies: we
asked families to scour their cupboards and drawers for unsharpened
pencils, gently used crayons, erasers, and other art supplies they
no longer need that might otherwise end up in a landfill. We set up
a collection point at school and chose a deserving recipient for the
donations, such as a day-care center, a shelter for homeless
families, or a public library children’s room. Giving new life to
unwanted items is one of the most cost-effective ways to recycle!
4. Walked or Biked to School: we
encouraged our classmates to walk or bike to school on April 22. We
recruited parents to escort groups of children from each
neighbourhood. If the school is too far to walk all the way, we
asked parents to set up carpools to a spot near the school and walk
the children from there. Walking to school we sent the message that
we don’t need to burn fossil fuels to get where we’re going. And
it’s good for our health!
5. Spruced Up the School:
we organized teams of
children and parents to pick up trash in the area around our school
on a weekend day during April. We provided trash bags, assigned
routes, and asked parents and their kids to bring heavy work gloves
to wear. At the end of the day, parents and teachers rewarded our
hard work with a cookout.
